Biography
Bass-baritone Lachlan Mason has a strong passion for choral singing that has grown and developed since being a boy chorister at the National Boys Choir and St Patricks Cathedral Choir. This time provided a range of experiences including international and national tours, a range of music learning opportunities and exposure to a range of different choral repertoire.
In high school Lachlan’s choral singing further developed under the guidance of Choral Director Andrew Hunter at Scotch College, Hawthorn. Lachlan was part of the schools Chamber Choir and following this joined the schools most senior 6 person close harmony group in his final 2 years. Lachlan also took singing lessons with Peter Mander completing VCE singing as an elective subject.
In 2012 Lachlan re-joined St Patricks Cathedral Choir singing sacred music, 16th and 17th century polyphony and 18th-20th century masses and anthems. Shortly after, Lachlan helped found 6 person a cappella group, Perfect 6th, which focussed on contemporary, jazz and pop arrangements reminiscent of The King’s Singers. Lachlan additionally continued to take singing lessons with Noel Ancell of the Australian Boys Choir.
At a similar time Lachlan joined Concordis Chamber Choir, a 35 person group singing Spiritual, Gospel, Folksong and Secular Art Music led by Philippa Jones of Firbank Grammar School. In Concordis, Lachlan has been lucky enough to perform in concert with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and participate in tours and competitions throughout Australia. After serving as a committee member for the choir since 2015 Lachlan took on the role of President in 2018 where he helps define the direction of the choir. Since starting as President, Lachlan has facilitated concerts in venues throughout Australia, helped plan regional and interstate trips for Choral festivals and Eisteddfod’s, launched the choirs music profile on a variety of digital platforms and organised recording and filming sessions for online performances and audio releases.
Lachlan is a regular attendant of choral and music concerts in Melbourne and enjoys participating in international virtual and stay at home choirs. He is still taking piano and theory lessons and enjoys continually learning more about music.
